the BAR
MATCHA-TEI
An exclusive hideaway bar designed as a contemporary companion to the adjoining traditional tea room, the BAR MATCHA-TEI brings together art, architecture, and mixology. The bar was designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida, using cedar wood and layered glass to create a minimalist space inspired by flowing water. There are just six seats along a counter cut from a single cedar slab. It is a private space for special moments like a tea ceremony, enjoying authentic hospitality, exclusive whiskeys, and seasonal cocktails by internationally renowned bartender Tsuyoshi Kimura.
Interior Design
New Material Research Laboratory
The interior was designed by the architectural design firm New Material Research Laboratory, founded by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto and architect Tomoyuki Sakakida. The impressive space features a counter made of solid Japanese cedar, with a grain that resembles the spreading ripples of water, as well as beautiful laminated glass that has been carefully textured by craftsmen.
